Do I have to tear out my wood fence right now?
No. The immediate rule covers only new fences. Existing fences fall under Phase 2, and the City of Pasadena sets that deadline, up to 5 years after the state adopts final regulations. But contractor calendars fill fast once deadlines land.
Can I keep most of the fence and replace just the last section?
Usually, yes. The regulation targets the 5 feet nearest the structure. Swapping in a metal gate or noncombustible panel at the connection point is the most cost-effective path to compliance on many Pasadena lots.
My Craftsman home has period-appropriate wood fencing. Are historic properties exempt?
The current draft does not carve out a blanket historic exemption for fencing in the ember-resistant zone. Does vinyl fencing comply?
